 On Your doorstep

 

The cottage provides an ideal base from which to enjoy many outdoor activities, including cycling, kayaking and loch and sea fishing: from the rocks around the bay, you may catch   mostly pollock, mackerel and wrasse. Equipment such as bicycles, fishing rods, etc, may be stored in the byre next door.

 

Argocat trips, run by LANTRA qualified instructors (Kenny and Alasdair), are available at a nearby croft. 

 

Guests also enjoy hillwalking, birdwatching, exploring the coastline and visiting  the local beaches. However, many  of our guests simply wish to relax in the cottage garden and and enjoy their immediate surroundings. 

 

Wildlife.

From the cottage itself, guests have observed a variety of sea life, including seals, otters, basking sharks and a wide range of seabirds. Red deer and pine marten frequent the area, usually in the early morning, or at dusk. 

 

Local History

Porthenderson, and  the cottage itself are of historical interest. The village has recently been  been the subject of a fascinating local history project, while the cottage is next to the site of what was a small local boatyard. Evidence of the former slipway can be seen on the shore. Further information can be obtained at Gairloch Heritage Museum which is well worth a visit. 

 

Slightly Further Afield 

The wider area offers a range of activities including boat trips, pony trekkng, a nine hole golf course, art galleries and a range of restauraunts and coffee shops. 

At the Fairy Lochs, about four miles away, you will find the wartime crash site of a liberator bomber, while the Inverasdale Museum gives fascinating insight into the role of Loch Ewe as a World War Two naval base. 

 

Explore  Inverewe Gardens, a  lush, sub-tropical-style, oasis perched on a peninsula at the edge of Loch Ewe. This world-famous historic garden is one of Scotland’s most popular botanical attractions.
